BABETTES GÆSTEBUD (Babette's Feast, 1987) **** Maybe we will all be artists in Heaven, and please the angels. I can't think of anything better. I bet it's even more than that. Gabriel Axel's perfectly paced meditation on the torment of illusory choice, mortality and redemption. Beautiful depiction of the desolate Jutland coast, and its stark Protestant inhabitants. Things have been sliding away from them for years until a French chefette gets the wine flowing, only once but it's all they need. Two of them kiss! Not hardcore though. It's incredible how much Bibi Andersson communicates without moving, or even blinking her eyes.
