THE BLACK SCORPION (1957) *1/2 Bearded, white-haired Mexican scientists who conduct tequila experiments on themselves during coffee break must subdue a legion of enormous slobbering scorpions. Hopefully because of the tequila, in any event they begin by lowering themselves into a volcano in a telephone booth and photographing the elephantine reptiles. Sadly, and much to their surprise, this strategy fails and the largest scorpion (who sounds precisely like the mutated ants in Them! due to budget problems) descends on Mexico City. Not to be outdone by the scientists the Mexican Army loads up a truck with meat and lures the scorpion to an empty soccer stadium wherein it is attacked by helicopters, tanks, and...without explanation...bulldozers. Eventually someone harpoons it in the neck with a copper wire hooked up to the city power supply and a staggering fireworks display ensues. This is not as tragic as when an extra fell into a volcano earlier. Ah the luck of the Alvarez!
