BOYS OF THE CITY (1940) **1/2 "Ya ain't gonna let us down are ya?" "Nah, I ain't got no lace on my underwear." Integrated gang of NYC juvenile delinquents are just havin' a good time complaining about everything and trying to avoid the cops, but get sent upstate in a woody. Couldn't figure out if this other guy was a judge or a gangstah, turns out both. He gets moided...I mean murdered, in a haunted house. I like the way these old films get to the point without an elaborate danse de denoument. I like Minerva Urecal, quick get me the three films where she appears with Bela Lugosi!! The black kid has the best comedic sensibilities of the cast, but is sadly mostly saddled with Amos & Andy style clichés. Some of it doesn't ring true-I mean, here are these young red blooded American hoodlems in a house full of treats and...they're more interested in the cigars than Inna Gest? Plus, I didn't hear any cussin'...and no one tried to figure out if there was any beer in the house anywhere.
