LES CARABINIERS (The Riflemen, or The Soldiers, 1963) ***1/2 Michelangelo and Ulysses leave raven-haired Cleopatra and Venus to go to war, because Michelangelo really wants a Maserati. The king has said that once in war they can do whatever they want, but the guy at the Maserati dealership says Michelangelo doesn't have enough money. He robs people for awhile, but it never really adds up. They end up trying to settle for a washing machine from town. Jean-Luc Godard is at his ultra-linear best; Catherine Ribeiro and Geneviéve Galéa in so many scenes together....formidable ! The litanies of war treasures are really funny, until you think about it.
