DAISIES IN DECEMBER (1995) *** Romance in the widower set. Very slow pace, but what do you expect-hot love scenes to the driving rhythmic accompaniment of "Do It 'til You're Satisfied"? Joss Ackland and Jean Simmons are both well cast in their respectable rolls as a stockbroker and aged young heart. She sets out to teach him how to garden without wearing a tie, among other things. In fact there is a scene where she starts putting moves on him but he falls asleep. The Cornwall coast is spectacular, the lack of anything particularly exciting only adds realism, and the revelation in simple pleasures scores philosophically. What really makes it though is that the big card is played at the right time, responded to credibly and appropriately, and leaves the actors and audience yearning at the buzzer, just like real love stories involving teenagers.
