THE DEEP (1977) **1/2 Jacqueline Bisset presents a compelling case for most beautiful actress of all time. Nick Nolte is cocky, tan and trim, so it's almost believable that she'd go to Bermuda with him. This would have been a better film if they'd just cut it indiscriminately somewhere about an hour before the end. It's a credit to director Peter Yates that it maintains suspense that long; the framework of a mass-market paperback Peter Benchley plot eventually collapses as he calls on explosions and (surprise) sharks to keep the thing going long enough for it to be considered a major studio epic. The underwater scenes are spectacular but some, and particularly the final fight scene, could have used music that was actually doing something.
