DEEP CORE (2000) *1/2 Great special effects in the film school tradition: shaking the camera to simulate earthquakes, and having the actors lean from side to side to dramatize the hectic manner of their transport...a journey deep into the earth! Journey to the Center of the Earth with sidebars on corporate greed and Chinese aggression, but none of Jules Verne's charm and precious little of his sense of adventure. This despite the fact that (as usual) the very existence of the world is threatened! Greed did this, coupled with incompetence, in other words it may be happening at this very moment at the nearest corporate (or government) office. Chilling. I like Bruce McGill's character-the intellectual, cursing, hard-drinking redneck. Such creatures are more common, and entertaining, than is generally known. I also found the portrayal of the Chinese governmental officials to also be true to life, of course if anyone would have watched the film there would no doubt have been lawsuits followed by a simpering Presidential apology attached to the Most Favored Nation trade bill. These new B-movie adventures don't have the appeal of the older ones, but I guess there's some possibility that they'll achieve it over the years, once they're less...you know...threatening. Discussions assuming some general knowledge of plate tectonics are certain to thrill anyone who paid as little attention in Geology as I did, and make you feel like you really learned something.
