DINOSAURUS! (1960) ** Earlier, better, more likely and sensible version of Jurassic Park. Two dinosaurs and a caveman, long frozen in a few feet of water off the coast of St. Croix, are dragged ashore by construction workers and brought to life when hit by lightning. Good material for a remedial metaphor class: see how the wicked Tyrannosaurus Rex is similar to the deceitful governor, and how the gentle Brontosaurus is so benign like the land developing construction boss....um. Oh yeah, and also how similar the manner of pursuit between the T-Rex, who wishes to eat the bronto, and the caveman, who hasn't got laid in a few million years, when he sees Kristina Hanson. Poor acting, cliché lines delivered too loudly; stereotyped villains, heroes and vixen; fake dinosaurs, extras who don't even bother cheering enthusiastically...if only they'd also had Harryhausen! It all boils down to a pitched battle between dinosaur and construction crane, as these things so often do, and closes with a determined threat of a sequel...which, since it never materialized is yet another way in which it should be preferred to its less entertaining legacy. Beautiful musical score by Ronald Stein. Who says no one wrote good classical in second half of the 20th century?
