DIPLOMATIC SIEGE (1999) * This is a horrible movie, I mean really bad-easily one of the worst of the decade. The entire thing is permeated with burnt popcorn and the spirit of "ABC Thursday Night at the Movies." As occasionally happens with putrid works of "art," it's so bad that it's funny and thereby occasionally entertaining. I mean, who wrote this stuff? Frustrated teenage kid running off as his father smothers a nuclear bomb to save him, "I mean, I know he's doing it for country and all that..." You could issue an impossible 10-hour racehorse examination on rational impossibilities presented by the script. Who thought Peter Weller and Daryl Hannah could pull this stuff off? Especially after watching them try? Rick Moranis would be more convincing in the pseudo-Bond role, and Daffy Duck more convincing as the twisted genius love interest. Tom Berenger naturally shows up and stamps around in standard issue UN black jackboots, angry and disgusted, presumably with the acting of his associates. In this milieu he reminds one of an undeserving aristocrat complaining about the quality of toilet paper in a High Street loo. The Joint Chiefs of Staff are portrayed as so stupid that even I don't believe it.
