DISTURBING BEHAVIOR (1998) ** "The problem with America is mankind's abject unwillingness to contribute to the delinquency of a minor." Tragic film in which high school students can't get an adult to buy beer for them, and (nearly as bad!) are ultimately lobotomized. Exquisite name-dropping, the writer has clearly hung out at all the right parties. They play Barry Manilow in the nuthouse, the preppies listen to Olivia's "Have You Never Been Mellow" while recruiting at the soda shoppe, and the Vonnegut-reading janitor quotes Pink Floyd as he goes over the cliff while destroying the preppie scum. On some level this film works as a metaphor for the myriad ways in which parents sell the individuality of their children out, and the sad metamorphosis that turns so many teen princes and Cinderella's into accountants and checkout clerks. Katie Holmes and Nick Stahl are very credible as high school kids who don't want good grades or stupid clothes. The kids are allright.
