DONNIE BRASCO (1996) *** This is a long way from being the best mafia movie, but it may do the best job of portraying the mindless totalitarian pecking order of the mob (and the FBI). Johnny Depp and Al Pacino is an inspired pairing and the scenes between the two are generally very good. Pacino especially, as the wise guy who's clipped 27 people (and that's before things get going) but never gets made, for obvious reasons. "Those are the rules," the implicit horror of fascist organizations, both of which want Depp to shave his mustache.
