ERNEST SCARED STUPID (1991) ** I'm not trying to be insulting, but this film climaxes in the first ten seconds. Not that that's the only good part, the entire opening credits are excellent with shots of Jim Varney spliced into classic B-movie stuff to the incredibly appropriate (not an insult, again) music of Bruce Arntson. The opening credits aren't the only good part either, it's funny whenever Ernest gets all pompous and he has serious physical humor competition from wild-eyed Bill Byrge, a huge but under deployed talent. I also like the part where the trolls handcuff the cop to the police car, and one troll eats his bullets, then the other troll hits the first troll on the back thereby shooting at the cop. That was funny, the trolls are good, the Halloween suit of the olde judge with toilet paper rolls for a wig was great, Ernest's salespitch sounding raps were funny. I, acting like a film critic, can only say something displaced like that it didn't gain critical mass as a narrative for me, or that the milken sum was less than the cumulative effect of its many immature parts. I like it when the dogs drives too. Against all presumptions, the script deserves a careful listen to gain the most from the many modest nuggets.
