THE EVICTORS (1979) 1/2* One of those whodunit/what-the-fuck's that offers no clues and ends up on such a preposterous note that you're relieved you didn't get there first, regretting only that you got there at all. Suffers from a split personality with the first half setting up a tragi-artsy dark tree-laden atmospheric period piece thing, though not well; and then changing gears into a slasher comedy which it does significantly worse. The music is genre excellent (especially when the horn comes in) and deserves better than this insipid piece that includes some nice cinematography but ultimately proves as incongruous and dully unsettling as the northern Louisianians it depicts. No one sounds like they're from the area, though Vic Morrow does a good job with the idiosyncratic mannerisms of the morpheme-ridden vernacular. Bunch of crickets chirping in the middle of winter.
