FATHER'S LITTLE DIVIDEND (1951) **1/2 I've got to say this: movies about the fifties strike me as being about a culture more bizarre than that depicted in Santa Claus Conquers the Martians. They're all sure that Elizabeth Taylor's doctor is insane because she thinks childbirth is natural, and the mother shouldn't be separated from the baby (which somehow happens anyway). Spencer Tracy is the one on drugs when the child is born, but his overbearing wife squeezes the information out of him before he passes out. Tracy is brilliant in the narrative, particularly on the insanity of pregnant women and women orbiting pregnant women, and Elizabeth Taylor is demure and drawling except when she's blowing up and acting the nut.
