A CINDERELLA STORY (2004) *1/2 It's fair to question why they would do this: just paste the Cinderella story onto a very watered down version of teenage Los Angeles (no drugs or alcohol, or sex, or much rock 'n' roll), then trot out Hilary Duff as the centerpiece. Is it just to make money, to suggest to the public that Ms Duff had matured as an actress to the point where she could play the classics? Nah, I think it was all a little better intentioned than that, if subconsciously. I read a review of Twilight once, where the reviewer suggested that the novel was so popular with young ladies of a certain age because vampires-in addition to being mysterious, and in this instance, handsome-didn't like cheerleaders. I think this is more of that: A nice little excursion for teenage girls who are a bit brighter than their milieu, and need and deserve a little bit of encouragement.
