ANGELS IN THE OUTFIELD (1994) *** I've always got kind of nauseated in the part of Peter Pan where they start yelling about "Do you believe in fairies?" I've always been into angels, I guess that's my prejudice. This is a spiritual Disney flick, it deals with real life issues…they're omnipresent, never brushed aside but instead…not at all marginalized…more put into context of the spirit. Oh yeah, I love baseball, too, though I've never been an Angels fan. So it's reaching for things that the greatest philosophers can't reach, yet…it's difficult to dispute the (not original but too often ignored) premise that hope and optimism attract…good things. It's a great mix of actors, too, no one could overshadow Joseph Gordon-Levitt or Milton Davis, Jr., but given the most lines and chance Danny Glover damn near does…I'd hire him to manage, even in the early scenes, he's a baseball man . Tony Danza really does throw like a pitcher with arm problems, too…I'd like to assume that this is great acting, but anyway it's scenes of Grover Cleveland Alexander, which is no small thing. Grover ruled, and so does this flick.
