BUBBA HO-TEP (2002) **1/2 A different kind of horror movie. Elvis grows old in a nursing home, wishing for an erection and battling seemingly mutant cockroaches. Oh, but just you wait: things really get going when he teams up with JFK to battle the redneck Egyptian undead from Mud Creek! Elvis and JFK just wanna have fun. And, being who they are, you can damn well better bet they do! Don Coscarelli endows his film with irrefutable evidence of nonconformist intent, Bruce Campbell generates a sense of dignity downright Elvisian in magnitude, and Ossie Davis is quite nearly typecast as the most beloved president of the 20th century. Yeah, Ossie Davis, you heard me right!, what are you, rascist? I don't think there's much more to it than that. A lot of it's in the concept, you see, and some more is in the execution. In this sense it unquestionably compares with both Citizen Kane and Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure.
