CUTTHROAT ISLAND (1995) ** I don't believe that it was before-or after-it's time, I think that people are always ready for a good pirate yarn. And this is very close to one. The main problem-not a bad one and far from the worst of them-is that Geena Davis just isn't credible, for me, as a great leader of men. She's cool, I've always liked her, she has a great smile, but it defies subjective credulity that she could maintain control of a pirate ship for 45 seconds. Maybe someone else....but only Angelia Jolie springs to mind...and she was still a few years away from being a headliner. I mean, no one else is all that great either, though Frank Langella-like Geena-certainly has his moments. So there's this great looking movie in the right place in the right time, but...I think maybe a lot of Hollywood got confused by the level of "realism" in Indiana Jones movies, and thought that anyone could do what Harrison Ford did. Takes a lot to suspend belief that far, my friends, though it can be done when the stars are lined up just right.
