DANTE'S PEAK (1997) *1/2 The computer imagery of the pyroclastic cloud is pretty cool. Sadly, all the pomp and circumstance never leads to much of a pyroclastic flow. No, really. Well, none depicted. I guess that's symbolic for my feelings on the thing. The special effects, however obviously boxed from a computer shell, completely dwarf all of the actors. Pierce Brosnan is supposed to be this sad figure of a dashing volcanologist (pause on the potentialities of the role), but his main contributions appear to be making bizarre decisions that end up imperilling people. Look closely, it's true. Oh yeah, they're trying to assure you that he's making these radical and brilliant moves, but just think about them for a second. His character obviously commissioned the script. And the characters are such that their salvation is more a matter of vague interest than genuine concern. Even the dog, really, almost. So, you know, yea., who cares?
