THE DEAD (1987) **1/2 Spirited, but possessed I believe of a spirit less than James Joyce. More important evidence of the long resolved matter that it's impossible to film a great writer. John Huston has it looking perfect, he's got fine actors working every angle. There's no problem with any person involved in this. The problem is of course the man uninvolved, the creator as difficult to detect much less discern as the creator whose torments he lamented. The only way to do it is probably what they break down and do at the end: show pretty pictures and let a living one read.
