DINOSHARK (2010) ** "Welcome to the…", perfectly delivered. Absolute overkill for those who loved the sequence of Jaws of the shark coming up from beneath the swimming young lady, and eating her. In fact, several of the scenes might be considered in some way derivative from the Jaws franchise (the sailing regatta, etc.), but did Steven Spielberg ever think of a shark attacking an entire women's water polo game? Did he? Did he! Huh?, Huh! (he did not, or if he did he never admitted it) In fact the film is almost understated for a Roger Corman production: babes abound but it is after all Puerto Vallarta, and it's more realistic than sensationalist; and eatings and bombings abound, but what do you expect with a 150 million year old dinoshark on the rampage? Surely nothing less. The monster is wonderfully realistic, not nearly as silly, and rarely in evidence compared to the one in this film's sister film, Sharktopus. And to top it all off there are actually some actors with talent-no, not Corman himself, who, like Hitchcock (hey, you in the back in the glasses, stop giggling…there can be comparisons between the two) likes to put himself in the corner of a scene or something…but here he's an actual character, replete with lines! He's not real great, but it's cool seeing him. Iva Hasperger, Eric Balfour and Humberto Busto are the ones I was talking about with some talent-which doesn't necessarily help a film like this, but at least they're not so great that they get in the way.
