DOCTOR IN DISTRESS (1963) ** The temptation, as Dirk Bogard's defining series goes to spirit...is to suggest that it's the audience, or especially the writers in distress. I guess that's kind of funny, but the truth is that none of the earlier ones were all that much better...it more relies on an affable and bemused spirit, and this one also invokes some of that. Dirk's not as strong as before-he's not in that much of it and he's not missed-and they don't do much around his weak punching: Samantha Eggar can clearly do more but they get rid of her before she can do it; James Roberton Justice probably can't and they give him every opportunity not to. What is the point of drinking so regularly if it makes you neither more amused, amusing nor friendly? He's just pissing on his liver and boring the hell out of everyone around him, what a flick. So they spend much of the film apparently having forgotten that they were looking for a medical joke, and some might suggest instead being one. Maybe, but it won't hurt you more than to smile.
