THE ENGAGEMENT RING (2005) **1/2 Ok, I enjoyed it but I don't want to make too much of it. Not because I'm too cool-which is of course true also-but because there wasn't much there that I didn't enjoy. I got it all. Charming, in that made for television way, kind of hokey romance story served up with the most appealing elements of Italian culture and California wine. Which is to say it probably helps, the less experience you've had with California wine, or at least the fewer comparisons that you've been able to make. But there is such thing as good, or at least decent California wine and I've already digressed and blown such non-plot oriented matters out of proportion. Sorry. So it's a nice little plot for the "Murder, She Wrote" and maybe "Falcon Crest" and "Moonstruck" crowds, and I sure don't think it's more than that, but it's fun. "Why is it so fun?" you ask. I'll tell you: It's fun because the actors are good and it looks like they're having a good time and like they like each other. Even the ones who are supposed to be mad, it looks like they like each other. Patricia Heaton is so Northern California looking and acting that it's very surprising to hear that she made her way to the set by way of Ohio and New York. Tony Lo Bianco gets all the big moments which is good. Because he's supposed to and he's good at it. And so on and so on. Let's eat!
