ERIN BROCKOVICH (2000) **1/2 In its own terms, an exploration of the power of boobs in the legal arena. Yes well, that's one way to make trial preparation in a multi-plaintiff civil suit more palatable for the masses. Julia Roberts talks about 'em, evidences 'em and works 'em without really, you know, letting anyone do too much about 'em-cinematically or ...you know. Funny boob talk, earthy but honest and so kind of pure. She's great at these characters-saucy gals who spent a little too much time investigating the underbrush on the wrong side of the tracks, and came back out of it with that appealing blend of arrogance, confidence and defensiveness. It's Hollywooded-out (you want a film about paralegal work that isn't ?I), its heart is in the right place, the good guys tormented and the bad guys bad, and everything-the desert, the attire, the cars-looks right. So it's Julia's baby and she delivers, Albert Finney as the wayward and not always bold heart of the legal profession...but big scenes are gloriously stolen by Veanne Cox as intellectual constipation: she looks right, fails to register emotions brilliantly as thoughts cloud the visage, I know that lady! Be-vare, be-vare...
