FLUSHED AWAY (2006) ** David Bowers' and Sam Fell's stuff-most notably Wallace & Gromit-has always struck me as more impressive than entertaining, and this is more of that. The hybrid claymation animation is tremendous, but the dialogue sacrifices rhythm and momentum in unnecessarily lengthy forays to medium-clever lines, and the admirably simple plot fails to give way to any character that I care about. So it's all kind of highbrow for a cartoon about a rat floating around in the sewers of London trying to save the world...but it's pleasant and not gross, smart and not stupid, and not a waste of time even if not terribly fulfilling on a personal level.
