THE GHOSTS OF BERKELEY SQUARE (1947) **1/2 Has there ever been a film with a more British premise than this?: ghosts are stuck in a house in London until it's visited by royalty. I knew that Robert Morley could play the constipated ass (Mary Poppins), the self-righteous puritan of admirable faith and passion ( The African Queen ), and any number of roles....between quite well and brilliantly...but here he is just stealing the show in slapstick . Just tearing it up. Slapstick of a uniquely British nature, to be sure, but a film so silly that his most famous characters should find it positively vile. I don't. It's funny. Kind of rock 'n' roll before the time...
