GOLDFINGER (1964) **1/2 They knew that they were on to something, but they tried too hard. The super-villain stuff just goes on and on, though tying him to Red China was probably something a lot scarier in those days. And Sean Connery.he works perfectly when there's enough interesting stuff going on around him, but he's just so understated about it all, James Bond should be calm and dashing yeah, but more enthusiasm could probably be boiling through. They also haven't quite settled on his character, so he's a fairly vulnerable Bond who spends most of the film in involuntary captivity. On the plus side there's plenty of action to move it along, it's only really pale when set against Dr. No , the Aston Martin is the greatest of all Bondmobiles (imagine the humiliation of being a victim of the ejector seat, hah!), and Honor Blackman is only the headliner (as Pussy Galore!) of a historic gaggle of Bond girls that includes Shirley Eaton and Tania Mallet. I'm not saying it's a bad Bond film-there are some and this is not one-just that since Sean chose to do so few, it's disappointing that this one isn't better.
