GORGO (1961) *1/2 Not particularly subtle British effort to play Godzilla . I mean that the effort to imitate is not subtle, the film itself is too often so subtle as to bring even its own existence into question. The monster looks almost exactly like Godzilla, but with red eyes and ears (and sadly, no superpowers), and it sounds exactly like Godzilla to the point where you have to figure someone lifted a few cans of soundtrack somewhere along the way. Being essentially a secondary Godzilla flick, none of the lack of originality would be much of a problem if the damn thing was just more entertaining. Instead it lulls you towards sleep. There are no entertaining characters: I'm not just complaining that there are no eccentric Japanese , I'm also complaining that I've never seen British people this normal. The footage of the creature running amok up the Thames would have been wonderful, if it had just been preceded by something a lot weirder . Yep, that's right, a prehistoric creature brought to the surface by underwater volcanic explosions off the coast of Ireland and traded into slavery in a circus just isn't weird enough for this kind of flick, without the fixin's.
