H.M.S. DEFIANT (1962) ** Dirk Bogarde is nasty! All you have to do is watch this, to understand why so many officers in Vietnam ended up with bullets in their back. There are points of the film, not a few, where it's so slow that even that doesn't seem like even that could redeem it. Don't get me wrong, Dirk's performance is a good one, you're supposed to be disgusted and he makes damn sure you are. Will Obi-Wan Kenobi (I mean Alec Guinness) rally in time…to save the world, that England, and his dignity? Well let's hope so, but even if he does what took him so fucking long? Good looking movie with talented players, but more annoying than most everything else except when the great ships are shooting at each other. That part's kind of cool, and there's a strong pro-union subtext, considering it portrays a historical situation that pre-dates unions.
