HERBIE FULLY LOADED (2005) **1/2 Working off a template of master Robert Stevenson, obviously, but they do it no ill violence. In fact it's fun, it's good. Even though they interrupt the action every few minutes to play thirty seconds or so of some lost and (usually) awful song.I mean, most of 'em are songs you definitely wouldn't want more than thirty seconds of, so maybe that should be considered in mitigation. It all works despite this, ahem, updated and improved format, because the actors don't lose the rhythm of it. Lindsay Lohan, she just has that thing where you want things to work out well for her. I'm not saying that she's a great actress at this point in her career or even a great person (never met her), just that she has that aura, that energy that.well, she makes it an inland California thing here, and you just wish her well. Justin Long's not an unreasonable bashful love interest, Michael Keaton's actually very good at projecting NASCAR father with a little hay in his head and. Well, the funniest moments of the film are definitely face twitchings and voice inflections from Matt Dillon. If he could have taken light work this seriously twenty years earlier he might have been an all-time pin-up boy, much to his own consternation no doubt. I haven't mentioned the VW, but you know it's going to do well if they give it it's moments, and they do. It's a worthy entry in the Herbie canon, and no one could have asked for or expected more than that.
