HIGH STAKES (1986) ** Corny, stupid, Canadian contemporary film noire spoof that somehow, absurdly-and as its finest flourish-involves Nazis. It is so corny, and so stupid, and so Canadian…so pathetic, really, but with those as its most readily identifiably objective characteristics…that you kind of end up feeling sorry for it, and liking it, just a little bit. There are many good reasons that you've never heard of any actors-going on to even bigger and better things never appears to be a possibility (no budding Leslie Nielsen's here, hoser), but…you know, some may have Casablanca, some will have something of some lesser substance, and if…you know, you've had a career…and you've had this , well it beats me. My best film was Practical Magic.
