KING OF NEW YORK (1990) **1/2 There's just something....I'm positive....I can't begin to escape the sense that if David Bowie had grown up in a different neighborhood, and so obviously turned into a crime world overlord, there's no question but that this would have happened. Of course it's really Christopher Walken instead, I mean, it's not really him, but he's being the David character, hopelessly overplaying it and not at all without glory or insanity creeping in every time they show an edge. I like it. It's a good movie. It's a good looking movie, the dens of decadence look and feel and sound right, the violence is fairly ultra but I guess that's probably how it is (no empirical knowledge of that one)...the actors look right, and good (especially Carrie Nygren, who speaketh not, in apparent furtherment of her desirability in the realm...yeah it's also that kind of flick).... Doesn't make you want to be there, any of it, but it's enough to know that it's out there and however different the standard of exchange, it's as understandable as lot of places.
