KUNG FU PANDA (2008) *1/2 Rarely in the annals of cartoons has there been anything so brilliant-the narrative so perfectly matched with the action-and unadulterated joy...of the first five minutes. Absolutely brilliant, art, I say ART!!!!! Unfortunately the first part is so great that when the bottom drops out it leaves you plenty of time to wonder whether the rest of it is as lame as it seems, or whether it's really ok and just suffering in comparison. I like Jack Black, he's got greatness in him-and Kung Fu Panda is Jack, even more than any character that bears his actual likeness, but he pretty much always eventually wears out his welcome, and starts grating on me. So that keeps happening. Also very well animated animals jumping around kicking each other, which children enjoy imitating, and brings them joy. I'm going to watch the first five minutes as often as I can, then move on to something else.
