LIGHTNING: FIRE FROM THE SKY (2001) *1/2 Spoiler-as if-alert: the climax is a kid trying to stop the storm of the century with a bottle rocket, as Bo Duke, who has just been hit by lightning but is pretty much fine, looks on in great hope. Helluva construct for a film that's mainly trying to warn rural towns what's going to happen if they let in Walmart. John Schneider was a lot more entertaining from the wrong side of the law, but is possible that he'll find his way back? Who cares, I think. His father/son subplot is hokey beyond redemption, painful for all the wrong reasons. Far more entertaining are the explosions of fully realized emotion by young Erika Thomas, and the wry observations of Gary Sandy. Then there's the comic relief, at the expense of the yuppie small town mayor. Good fun, and enough of it so long as you're not too ambitious. "Fire from the sky…"….how could they never have even played "Smoke on the Water"?
