LOVESPELL (1981) ** Nice looking take on the legend of Tristan & Isolde. The problem being that you really need majorly great, serious actors....to move something this epic in scope and historically appreciated to move it beyond....cliché or silly. Yes, I understand that Richard Burton is the headliner, and I am among those who would not argue with anyone saying that he's as great as any actor I've ever known of...but it was towards the end. At the height of his powers, even only four years earlier in Equus, he was a cauldron of a man, a psychological locomotive so out of control-even while silently standing still-that no amount of speculation could sensibly engage even the scope of possible landing spots. Here, there are shadows of that, sacred shadows, evident foreshadowing of a curtain coming down on one of the greatest shows that any actor has ever put on, over a lifetime.
