LOVING YOU (1957) ** In the great showdown between Rock 'n' Roll and Boring Ignoramuses, Elvis wins. Good thing, too. I don't know that you could say that his musical performances were still raw, but at least organic and there was a lot of heart to 'em. He gloriously-and intentionally-overstates several of his better lines to the point of breathing that mythological life into them-but that's about it except for the great Elvis faces: consternation, brooding rage, self-congratulation, winsome wryness and metaphysical entropy disconnect...that's a real good one. So if you enjoy just seeing what's reflecting through Elvis' face, this is really good. There's also a plot and stuff, but I'd just ignore 'em, none of that's why anyone wants to watch it. I dunno. I see these early Elvis movies where he's historically good looking, and has that great voice and moves like a leopard, and has all the confidence and charisma in the world, and I see a big warning: things get tricky when everyone wants to do what you want 'em to do, when everyone wants in good, when everyone wants to make you happy.
