MERLIN'S SHOP OF MYSTICAL WONDERS (1996) *1/2 Says that it's starring Ernest Borgnine, but he's not in it much and doesn't really do anything. Sorry. But Bunny Summers, now, well she's something alright! Merlin hooked himself a..well is there no limit to magic, or what?! It's all not much better nor worse than most any movie made for tv, I guess. It's impossible to imagine that it was really made in the '90s as the entirety is so mega-permeated with a devoutly '80s cheesiness. I guess it takes some artists longer than others to catch the wave. Small waves are particularly difficult to detect. The best part is the brief cartoon clip of the guy going "I'm pincushion man, the terror of balloon world!" But isn't that always the way with magic? Pointing to something greater beyond itself? What is, after all, a love potion? And although I'm loathe to even suggest that wealth is greater than magic, it must be so to the people who would exercise magic in pursuit of it, at the expense of everything else. Let your kids watch it, it may degenerate into a debate over what the most pointless part is, but there really are a lot of worse things out there.
