MONSTER ISLAND (2004) ** This had to be one of the easiest concepts to pitch in the history of showbiz: Carmen Electra gets abducted by a giant mutant ant! Wow and they start writing checks. Not that that's not enough, but there's even more!!: Adam West (looking damn good after all these years, and still deliberating brilliantly over every word like Batman) as Dr. Harryhausen, and a bad guy who uses hollow Bush (the Younger) administration slogans (that couldn't explain anything) to try and explain very difficult situations ("The dung beetles hate our freedom."). Ah, you gotta like that...and it's all predicated on the very proper supposition that even though technology passed it by, the '50s teen flick is here to stay! Yeah, rock 'n' roll and everyone gets a girlfriend! Right on! ...and those crazy monsters man, I like the sea creatures the best, dude! It's got to be difficult analyzing this sort of thing as a talent scout: no one could do anything with any of these roles, but there may be a future in something even better for Mary Elizabeth Winstead or Chris Harrison.
