MORNING OF THE EARTH (1971) **1/2 You know, I don't think this was really meant for mainstream audiences. As mainstream as me, for example. If you know what it is, and you really want to see it, you're probably gonna love it. It's broadly about taking what you need out of life, as specifically related to people who only want to surf! Endless surf scenes, only rarely interrupted for a few seconds of psychedelic sun or beach or locals or smoking pipes, to the accompaniment of a widely varied soundtrack. It's a great snapshot of a corner of the back-to-the-earth-movement. Did I mention that they also surf a lot? Or that there's not a single word of dialogue, monologue or soliloquy? Don't need it, earth's the character, you see, I think. Fact is that the waves are varied and great, the surfers know what to do with every single one of 'em, and Albert Falzon's film matches them for improvisation and artistic achievement. I believe that surfing is an art form in the highest sense of the word, and I have a sense that I'd like all of these guys. I just get jaded watching 'em ride wave after wave...what starts out as admiration and amazement eventually turns towards monotony, shadowed by a towering sense that I'm really missing out!
