MR. SMITH GOES TO WASHINGTON (1939) **** It's a political litmus test: if you get all excited, and horrified about what's become of the United States, you're a real patriot. If it doesn't, whatever your views, you're jaded beyond...you're never jaded beyond repair, but you're going to need to dig deep, and long. Of course the problems of American oligarchy were less daunting in 1939, though more daunting than when Paine and Lincoln warned earlier of them. This movie says it straight out: "Sometimes lost causes are the only ones worth fighting for." And true American ideals, the revolutionary ideals, the ideals of equality and government of the people, by the people and for the people...you can't forgive yourself if you ever stop fighting for them. Frank Capra lets Jimmy Stewart carry it for the most part, but his flourishes-the hat scenes-are not less than brilliant. The way that Jean Arthur melts into the soft lens is nothing less than perfect, sinners can be saints too, and there is no joy in heaven greater than that of redemption. Blessed are the screwed up, for only they can bring that joy. Every American should see this film before the age of eight, so they get the sense that they can win; and periodically thereafter, so they're reminded of the fact. Too many great people have put too much into it for any of us to settle for less. If that all sounds kind of hokey-please color me hokey.
