NANNY McPHEE AND THE BIG BANG (2010) *** I enjoyed this one much more than the original, I think it's better. Weird, because it follows the formula to a fault. But in doing so it's not as ambitious, and where I was distracted in the first one by their trying to make this big statement that was clearly so far out of reach, this time they just kind of just kick it and make a very good children's movie. Emma Thompson has to be good for it to work, and her vocal inflections regularly verge on the point of hysterically amusing, but it's not even the best performance of the lot. A couple of the kids, Oscar Steer and Eros Vlahos, are just perfect as the farmer "poo" boy and upper crust foppitt, and Susanna White's shots are just flaky enough to let you know that she really could take a shot at that highbrow nonsense if she felt like it.
