OPEN RANGE (2003) **1/2 Kevin Costner does exhibit a great confidence in the patience of his audience. Elegiac. That's what they're shootin for, for a long time in this one. That an visible an identifiable veins of hindrance an evil. So the concerns that it might be a cowboy movie without any shootin are unfounded. Costner an Robert Duvall are right convincin as fellahs you'd rather have on yore side in just this sort of situation. There are a few scenes early where you wonder if they just casted Annette Bening because it was the only way they could get Warren Beatty to attend their parties, but she jumps right back and reminds you that she's pretty damn good. Costner has a scene or two like that, too...can't he look at hisself and see what's goin' on? Ain't there nobody aside him willin to point it out? Shoot that one again, hell, one of them scenes you'd have to shoot Annette doin it near thirty times to get one that bad. But there's mainly good ones. An it does build up. It does.
