OVERBOARD (1987) ***1/2 Arturo and Edwina/sittin' in a tree/k-i-s-s-i... With the exception of Ghostbusters, this is probably the film that I've seen more than any other. I am a man of many, many moods--most of them wonderful, and all of which appreciate this. It's a fairytale of a love story, and it happens to be a real fairytale of a real love story. No Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell didn't meet and all like this, but it may be the perfect allegory for us mortals. Are they not-Hollywood legends-fairytale people? But are they not real? There's a delicious irony to Goldie playing the rich bitch, first because she really is rich, and second because we've always known that she's one of us anyway. So she's just playin' at lies in order to illuminate the obvious truth. So Goldie and Kurt's story, the way we're fed it and hear it from publicists and paparazzi may not hold more truth than Arturo and Edwina's...and yet we're all here and out there, and we're all lucky when we feel those things that are the greatest things that you can feel. This is about that, and they're people who can light little fires around it that we all can see. Thanks.
