THE PHANTOM CREEPS (1939) **1/2 Bela Lugosi is not merely a mad scientist, but in fact nothing less than the self-proclaimed "greatest genius the world has ever known." This pre-dates Wile E. Coyote of course, so there's no telling which is now the greatest genius, etc. Bela's at least competitive as he's figured out how to be invisible, and also the secret to suspended animation, just in case invisibility's not enough. This was their idea of advanced weaponry, back in the day of biplanes. Even more impressive is Bela's taste in robots, now that's how an evil robot should look! Speaking of how things look, that Dorothy Arnold's quite the little pistol, ain't she? Ah, it's all good fun, wild ideas, dreamscapes of how science could be made interesting. Bela's laugh alone makes it worth the ride.
