PSYCHO A GO-GO (1965) * I had such high hopes for this, I'd read that it was "worse than Ed Wood," that Al Adamson was worse than Ed Wood. Well, that's kind of true but it was disappointing, it wasn't much fun. I mean, yeah, there's an inescapable and ubiquitous lack of technical proficiency, that's not the problem. The cuts are incredibly rough and disjointed, the narrative makes bizarre and unnecessary assumptions, if the actors are half sober that's the high water mark of their dedication. But...you can't expect that wild and random of genius of Ed Wood (though Sidney W. Pink shared it in some measure), but I was hoping for more enthusiasm. There's never that sense that-all evidence to the contrary-art for the ages is being created. Everyone knows that it's a lousy film, and it's one of few high points if someone briefly notices enough to do something and make it worse. I've seen reviewers try and compare some role to Jack Nicholson, or say that some scene is really good, probably because of someone who had something to do later with The Deer Hunter...no, that's not true, none of that‘s true, there's nothing like that. Does this make Al Adamson the worse director of all time? I don't know, but if so only in a "who cares" sense of the tribute, rather than in any exalted state.
