REVENGE OF THE SITH (2005) ** Again, I'd be a lot more impressed if I hadn't already seen the other ones. What once passed for cosmic (if expansive) philosophy is now just wheels spinning in the ditch. The wonderment of it all-and there's definitely still quite a bit-has to live up to the nearly impossible standards of its predecessors. The occasional appearances of characters from the original Star Wars trilogy mainly serve to remind you how much more enjoyable, how fresh they were, the impact of them at that time...and how this impact isn't quite the same. Beyond that, though, if you're young or somehow haven't seen the other ones...there's going to be some impact here. Hayden Christensen isn't recognizable as the clod who tried to play Anakin Skywalker in the two predecessors...and that's not only positive in a way, but it's damn good news because he's actually good here. So, yeah, you know, even though it's supposed to be the last (in production), it's the one where they kind of try and link things together, and there's no small amount of soap opera in that. Soap opera mega-pop culture sci fi splasting all over the damn place...I don't know whether to recommend setting up with two popcorns, or taking a break in the middle to get a second one.
