FANTASTIC FOUR: RISE OF THE SILVER SURFER (2007) **1/2 I guess the Silver Surfer has always appealed to me more as a concept than a…reality?...real cartoon?, whatever. I really like the idea of surfing the universe, but it bothers me a little bit that he doesn't have a fin on the bottom of his surfboard. It also bothers me that he's so philosophically stumped by rather simple (but requiring difficult decisions) thought constructs, so it's not like I get all happy and cheer when he turns good. What's great about this movie…well, there's nothing great about it, but the last half hour or so-when the action really starts hoppin' and Dr. Doom makes off with the Surfer's stick---those are some action sequences, man, stuff's happenin'. Before that it goes on and on and is ok, I guess, and it makes some commentaries on celebrity, and foreign policy (the U.S. Army no sooner has the Surfer in their power than they violate his inalienable…um, alien rights), and the difficulties of balance in such a multi-faceted existence, but not deeper than you'd expect from, you know, a comic book.
