SCROOGE (1970) *** I think it's very telling that in his moment of triumph Albert Finney starts littering, and no one even thinks to suggest that he cease and desist....the Environmental Protection Act was brand new and already no one was enforcing it! Hah! (how's that for a politically correct, and idiotic statement?) Musicals aren't my thing, but they don't sing as often as in some, and though I only really like one of the songs (the love ballad, sappy me) there aren't any among the rest that are awful. And Finney's toad/Fred Flintstone/goat singing voice is somehow incredibly appropriate. It looks cool and everyone sounds like it should, and Kenneth More is a great Ghost of Christmas Present...and what with all the spirits and all it really does catch some of the spirit of the thing: Christmas, and Charles Dickens, and that blessed moment on the time/space continuum where the twain didst meet. I hope I turn good soon, like Scrooge.
