SHE MARRIED HER BOSS (1935) ** Very early indictment of yuppie-ism and on one of an infinite line of attacks on the accoutrements of inherited social position. I say "early" rather than "visionary" because..well, they figure the whole thing can probably be resolved by engaging in petty theft and destruction and rendering yourself a DUI candidate. I think they meant to put more into it than that, and their attack is reasonably on target, but talk about blowing up the baby to clean the bongwater..only a hangover could follow, but I guess it wasn't as beaten a path back in those days. It's a Claudette Colbert vehicle (supported in largest part by Melvyn Douglas, who has no idea how to pretend he's drunk), and as such about enough to give you a sense of why she was popular in the day, and an even more clear understanding of why she's not as well remembered as some others. The Edith Fellows scenes are all great, though: what a wonderful, spoiled little brat of a bitchy smartass! Why would anyone ever discipline their child if there's a chance that otherwise she might turn out like that ! Yeah, yeah, yeah, punk rock for 9 year olds!
