SHERLOCK HOLMES (2010) ** Ben Snyder isn't the best Sherlock ever, but he's far from the worst. So many great actors have played the roll…to say that he's more than acceptable is to say that he's done reasonably well, reasonably well indeed. There's a lot of CGI, particularly early on (they couldn't find anyone to take a picture of the Houses of Parliament from a boat on the Thames?)-which I find somewhat incongruous in a Holmes flick-and it's not of the highest quality…but the lack of quality is more technical than aesthetic, as far as the angles and such they do a good job considering what were no doubt budget constraints. I like the idea of monsters in a Sherlock flick, and the two- and three-tone CGI aerial silhouettes are actually a very nice-perhaps the best-part of the movie. So it's a little modernized, not your high-octane Robert Downey, Jr. Holmes or in that league but acceptable enough if you're not a purist of some sort that probably irritates everyone around you more than the offenses-real and imagined-themselves. It's better than ok, but just.
